The History and Evolution of Search Engine Technology
A look at how search engines started and how they have changed.
Search engines are server side software designed to make it easier for a user to find things throughout the internet. Without search engines, many websites would remain secluded from one another and in many cases information would not be readily available for users to find and read.
The first tool that made the internet searchable was called Archie. Alan Emtage, a student at McGill University, created this application in 1990 that allowed a searchable database of file names from the internet. Archie was the beginning of a large list of search engines with different features and abilities that allowed the internet to grow to what it is today.
Such a simple idea changed the internet forever. As different people and companies improved Alan’s idea of a searchable internet the internet itself started to evolve. The internet is slowly becoming the replacement of many forms of media because it’s ability to be connected, up to date, and best of all free aside from the monthly fee of the connection. A whole world of information has combined before our eyes because the evolution of Alan’s idea of having a searchable platform.
Slowly but surely search engines gained ground on what they were able to index. Today many search engines still use old technology that allows the creator of a web page to input special keywords and tags within the code of a web page to allow them to be indexed toward the proper audience. The best search engines to date actually index the information found within the pages content.
Today, there are definitely major titans in the search engine world. Each is well funded by their advertising revenue driven by sponsored ads found within search results. Search engines results are now based on algorithms. Algorithms are rules set in place to rank pages within results differently in an attempt to give users the best experience for their given search.
Search engines also exist that allow you to search specific types of media such as images, video, news, sports, blogs, and forums. Narrowing the media you search from can often provide more desirable results. Major search engines don’t always offer these luxuries and finding the information you need can be very difficult.
The future of search engines is hard to determine. What we have seen in the recent years is the abundance of video media online. As web space and connection speeds are becoming more affordable and wide spread this trend is expected to continue but the next innovation in web search will surely be an exciting part in the evolution of search engines.

Home Improvement Siding
The buzz word in today’s real estate market and on HGTV is ?curb appeal? Your home has to have curb appeal. Curb appeal is the first and foremost important thing when selling a house. The outside of the house will be the first thing that your potential buyers will see. This first impression is where the money is.
So how important is home improvement siding? This depends on the situation. Does the increase in your home value out weigh the cost of new siding?
First of all you need to check your options. Can you repair your existing aluminum siding? Repairing aluminum siding usually requires the services of a contractor. Obtain an estimate from a contractor who does house siding repair and hold it for later use when it comes to comparing your options.
If you are to replace the siding, what type of siding would you choose? If you choose to replace the existing siding with vinyl siding, then obtain a vinyl siding cost estimate from a contractor. The same goes for imitation brick siding or cedar look siding.
Your next step should be to consult with a real estate agent. These are professional people who know what it takes to sell a house. Sit down with them and show them your options. The real estate agent can give you their professional opinion as to what your house is worth now. Given siding options, they can tell you what your home would be worth with each particular siding.
Subtract the value of your house now plus the cost of the new siding, from the potential value of the house after siding, to see if you have made an increase in value. You can then proceed to make a choice to either leave things as they are, or choose a particular siding and call the contractor.
A real estate agent can also give you a valuable opinion as to which siding would look best on your home. One of course that blends to the neighborhood.
Let’s say that you have no intention of selling your home, but you just want to improve the appearance. The same advice holds true. Make sure that the home improvements increase the value of your house as you never know when you may be ready to put your home on the market.

3 Simple Ways to Start Your Home Based Internet Business Right Now
3 Simple Ways to Start Your Home Based Internet Business Right Now
by: Andrea HayhurstSo, you’ve finally decided to take that giant leap of faith and start your very own home based internet business. You’ve decided that it’s finally time to step up to the plate and claim your share of all those internet riches you keep hearing about. Only problem is, now that you’ve finally made your decision, it seems like a pretty daunting task deciding what to do next. Using the term “information overload” to describe the problem seems like a huge understatement. Well, if you’re really serious about starting your own home based internet business, the next step really doesn’t have to be that difficult at all. There are 3 relatively simple ways to start making an online income and one of them is sure to fit your particular idea of what it is you would like to do. So, just relax, take a deep breath, and peruse the following list until you find something that strikes the right cord. 1-Join One or Several Affiliate Programs This is probably one of the easiest and quickest ways to get started making money online. The internet is full of products that have affiliate programs you can join and most of them pay generous commissions. When you join an affiliate program, you are simply making an agreement with the owner of a product that you will receive a commision in exchange for referring a prospect to that person’s product (usually a sales page that you have sent the prospect to via your affiliate link) if that prospect ends up making a purchase. Start by choosing a product or service that you’re interested in and then visit some of the websites which have achieved top rankings for the keywords which describe that topic. You’re sure to find the top affiliate programs for that industry relatively quickly. Or, try visiting one of the many affiliate program directories (you can find them quickly enough in Google) and scan their listings and recommendations until you find something that appeals to you. This is a good one for newbies since you don’t even need your own website to get started. You will, however, need to learn how to use the pay per clicks so you can get some targeted traffic to your affiliate link. Once you start generating some income from the pay per clicks, you can then start reinvesting some of your profits and get yourself set up with your own website. By that time the prospect of getting set up with your own website won’t seem so daunting. 2-Join a Residual Income Program Residual income programs are somewhat similiar to affiliate programs in that you typically get paid for referring a prospect to the program’s website if that prospect decides to make a purchase. However, the difference lies in the fact that with these programs you also have the opportunity to earn a monthly recurring income if the prospect you refer becomes a paying member of the residual income opportunity program. For example, I belong to one of these programs myself. If a prospect comes to my website and clicks on a link which takes them to the sales page for the product and they buy, then I get a commission. However, if that prospect also decides to become a member of the residual income opportunity program, then I get a check every month as long as that prospect remains a member of that program. People tend to be skeptical of these programs and get them confused with pyramid schemes. The way to tell if one of these programs is a pyramid scheme is to simply determine if the company in question offers a real honest to goodness product or service. If so, it cannot be classified as a pyramid scheme and you should be okay. Don’t be scared off by the fact that you will most likely have to pay a monthly fee to participate in the residual income opportunity. If you can build a downline for yourself in one of these programs, the monthly fee will be negligible compared to the potential residual income you could earn. Alot of these programs will provide you with your own cookie cutter website, which is okay if you are just getting started. Again, use the pay per clicks to start generating some traffic and then work on getting your own site up so you can start to build your own opt in list. 3-Sell a Hard Good or Downloadable Infoproduct Okay, okay, I know this one doesn’t sound so simple or easy, but to be honest, it’s really not as hard as it might first appear. Selling a hard good entails offering a real physical product (like fishing poles, for instance) for sale in your own online retail store. If this idea really appeals to you, go for it. Brainstorm some products you would enjoy selling, then do some keyword research in Wordtracker to develop a targeted niche within that market (deep sea fishing poles?). After that, you can use a drop ship source directory or the search engines to find manufacturers or distributors who will drop ship the merchandise for you (meaning they ship it directly to the customer and you don’t have to carry any inventory). Then go to Ebay or Yahoo and sign up for one of their stores. I know from personal experience that Yahoo has some merchant hosting packages that are great and super easy to use. They’ll even provide you with a shopping cart feature and help get you set up with a merchant account (so you can accept credit cards). Plus, you’ll get some traffic already built in since millions of people are using their shopping directory to browse for products every day. As for the website itself, don’t worry. Most hosting companies today have some type of site builidng solution available for those customers who wouldn’t know an html code from a java script. Believe me folks, if I, a completely technically useless and html challenged technophobe can do this, ANYONE can. Now, as to the infoproduct. By the way, I mean YOUR OWN infoproduct. Everyone on the web and their mother will tell you that this is the best way to make the really big bucks online. Write about something you know and/or love. The topic of internet marketing seems to have been way overdone. Unless, of course, you are a true expert on some niche internet marketing subject, then definitely do it. Just don’t do it because everyone else is. As for the actual writing, you don’t even have to do that if you really don’t want to. You can check out a site like elance.com and post your project and have writers bid on completing the project for you! And there are so many easy to use PDF ebook creators available that formatting the book should pose no technical challenge whatsoever. Set up a simple little one sales page website with a link for payment processing, optimize the site for the engines, use the pay per clicks, find some JV partners, and you’re in the money! By the way, I know of some guys who have about 10 or 15 of these little mini sites set up selling little reports on niche topics and raking in an average of $2,000 a month from each site. And they’re incredibly easy to set up and practically run on autopilot once you do! Well, there you have it. Just a few relatively simple ways to get you started on the way to raking in YOUR share of the internet gold mine!About The Author

College Football Week 11: Big Ten Bruisers
The stars seem aligned for Iowa to salvage something out of its disappointing 2006 season.
They got a massive wakeup call losing to at home to Northwestern last weekend, a result that would shake the lethargy off Eeyore. Their former supposed Heisman candidate, Drew Tate, has a healthy-ish thumb and needs to redeem himself after a very bad game against the Wildcats. They’ve got a six-year streak of playing in January bowl games on the line. This is their final home game of the season. They’ve beaten the University of Wisconsin four consecutive years, including two games in Iowa City (2004 and 2002), in which they allowed seven and three points, respectively, and covered easily. And finally, Wisconsin’s starting quarterback, John Stocco, had to leave the Badgers’ game against Penn State last week with a hurt throwing shoulder, and is questionable this week. Sounds good, right?
So why am I taking Wisconsin?
Well, first off, the Badgers are pretty good. They’ve got a legitimate shot at 11-1, and while they almost certainly won’t play in a BCS bowl, they’ll play on or about New Year’s and take in some much-needed publicity for first-year man Bret Bielema, who replaced Barry Alvarez at Wisconsin’s helm. They were competitive at Michigan before losing 27-13, and otherwise have rarely been tested; in their six Big Ten wins, their average margin of victory has been over 23 points. Meanwhile, Iowa is 2-4 in the Big Ten, including losses at Indiana and home against Northwestern. Tate has definitely led a potent passing attack — the Hawkeyes are 30th nationally in passing yards per game — but he’s made way too many mistakes: eight interceptions to 11 TDs on the season, and seven interceptions and just five TDs in Big Ten play. Considering Wisconsin allows the third-fewest passing yards per game and has allowed just three TD passes to 11 interceptions created, Tate could be in for another long day. On the other defensive sideline, the Hawkeyes have played passably well against the pass (ha), but have given up 101 passing first downs (the Badgers have allowed just 72). If Stocco winds up playing, Wisconsin will be as balanced as always.
And I think Stocco plays. He practiced Thursday night, and according to Bielema, made all the throws. He’s a tough kid who’s made 35 consecutive starts, and he doesn’t want to lead the seniors on his team (he’s one of them) to yet another loss against Iowa (last year’s Wisconsin class already graduated never having toppled the Hawkeyes). That should be enough motivation for a powerhouse rushing attack, led by P.J. Hill, who leads the Big Ten in rushing yards (1,370) and rushing touchdowns (13), and also averages a whopping 5.6 yards per carry. Stocco probably doesn’t have the NFL Draft Day future that Tate does, but he’s had a far better senior season, having thrown for 15 scores and just four picks.
Neither of these teams exactly faced a murderers’ row of non-conference opponents (Iowa had Montana, Syracuse, Iowa St. and Northern Illinois; Wisconsin had Bowling Green, Western Illinois, San Diego St. and finishes against Buffalo), and Iowa did have to play Ohio St., while the Badgers miss the Buckeyes this year. Still, Wisconsin has been far happier against the number in 2006: they’re 7-1-1 against the spread overall, while overvalued Iowa is an incredible 1-8. (In fact, this line actually opened in favor of the Hawkeyes by a point, before shifting slightly in Wisconsin’s favor.) The Badgers are 5-1 against the spread in their last six conference games, 5-0-1 ATS in their last six road games, 4-0 ATS as a road favorite, and 8-1 ATS as a favorite overall. Meanwhile, Iowa is 1-5 ATS against teams with winning records, 1-6 ATS in games after a straight-up loss, and 0-4 (and 1-8) ATS overall. I grant you that the Hawkeyes are also 5-1 ATS in their last six as a home ‘dog, but they’ve only played one such game this year, and they lost big-time against the number, to Ohio St.
Can I envision a scenario where Iowa finds its pride, Tate finds his game, and the Hawkeyes shake this season-long Eeyore-esque lethargy to improve their bowl status for December? Sure; after all, Iowa City is a tough and rowdy place to play. But I think Stocco is going to suit up, and Hill can be effective enough to keep Iowa honest on defense. Wisconsin wears down the Hawkeyes and stretches things out in the fourth quarter. So I’m taking Wisconsin (-1.5) at Iowa.
Last Week: I’ve had a couple of a squeaker wins this season, so I’ll have to grin and bear last week’s squeaker loss. Ohio University had a couple chances to pile on late in the fourth quarter against Eastern Michigan, but chose to simply run out the clock, taking home a 16-10 win. That would’ve been great, except they were favored by 6.5. Ah, well. The logic and reasoning behind the pick were sound; it was just a crummy day for scoring in Ypsilanti. With that hair’s-breadth loss, we’re 6-4 against the number so far this year.

I Have a Picasso and You Don’t (from the Author of, I Have a Rolex and You Don’t)
Having material things is a wonderful way to make a statement that says, ?I?m successful and I have arrived.? But what does it really say about the individual. I grew up poor in New Jersey (or is it poor New Jersey?) Anyway, I struggled and eventually went to college, started my own ad agency and finally made enough o live the American dream, whatever that is supposed to be. In my mind it describes a life of choices, travel, luxury and security. That would equate to an upper class home, a fine car and extra money to waste on frivolous items like designer watches and clothing.
But what does that actually mean in terms of happiness and quality of life? What is my marriage was in shambles? Then how could having an expensive ring help cure that? It can’t and that’s the point. Our priorities are somewhat out of whack. We value things over relationships. But is that so surprising considering the world we live in? We envy the celebrities with their seemingly carefree and decadent lifestyle. I say so-called carefree because we rarely get a peek below the surface at what’s really happening. Except when the press gets wind of something that’s gone terrible wrong and it hits the front page. Then all their wealthy and success is forgotten in the mess that follows.
We can learn from that example that keeping up the appearance of happiness is often more salient than being happy. After the divorce divides up the belongings, how important was that Picasso that now resides with the divorce attorney as partial payment for services rendered? Both parties must now liquidate a slew of expensive trinkets accumulated over the years and now have just become pawns in a game of who gets what.
It’s because the idea of love, friendship, loyalty and trust are words that have been delegated to a meaningless status and simply get in the way of the pursuit of the almighty dollar. We lust for a boat or summer home instead of a lasting and meaningful attachment. Can money really buy us happiness? This is an old question that never fully gets answered. We say that we would rather have love than money, but that gold pendant with the rubies is so tempting and would make our wife’s day. Then, minutes later, as we are leaving the store, the wife is yelling at the husband who forgot where he parked their car and the embarrassment it might cause.
I own and have owned many nice things. I collect art and I do own a signed Picasso. I bought a used Rolex 20 years ago and I like it too. But I was lucky to have a loving wife of 29 years until she passed away and a present one of 3 years. We enjoyed and still enjoy the first-class things and aren’t totally wrapped up in having something better than the neighbors or a designer bag to show it off. If we do happen to make that purchase it’s because we appreciate the way it’s made and how long it will last. The name is incidental. But our primary focus is on each other and that is something that can’t be bought or sold. By the way, I have my wife and you don’t.

I aim to become the president of my country. I have the object of becoming the greatest scientist. I will one day be the richest person in the world. I aim to and so goes the list of ambitions of people. Nobody remembers that the final goal for each one of us is going back to earth. Let us talk more about ambitions.
Are ambitions good or bad? This is difficult to answer, isn’t it? To be an ambitious person must be very good. With ambitions a person strives to achieve a great feat. Few of us have very big ambitions and few very small. It all depends on our contentment. What will make us feel happy? What will make us feel worthy, and what will make us feel powerful? It’s all about what we want from life. If you want money at any cost, you will compromise with all other values and try to make more money. But if your ambition is to become an honest person and live a God fearing life, no amount of money can attract you to do any wrongs.
Ambitions therefore depend upon our character, culture, mental makeup, outlook, values and so on. Till our ambitions don’t trouble others it is ok. If by achieving our goals, we make others happy, that is still better. But if our ambitions hurt others, we must revisit our thinking and redefine our ambitions. Cheap Vacation Travel Guide to Costa Rica
Costa Rica vacations can be inexpensive. This is a cheap vacation travel guide for families or solo travelers looking to extend their vacation by cutting down on daily expenses. Costa Rica is not just an adventure travel destination. Many visit for surfing, fishing, or just to hike the rain forest, enjoy wildlife, and lay on a secluded nature beach.
Tourist season in Costa Rica is from December through March. The cost of lodging, airfare, and food is cheaper by visiting after tourist season.
Airfare
If possible travel on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Use Travelocity or other agents that provide a flexible travel option for your destination. Then schedule your vacation around the cheaper flights you find using these tools.
San Jose is the capital city and the International airport (airport code SJO) is centrally located for visits to the Caribbean side of the country and the central or south Pacific.
Liberia in the northwest corner of the country has the only other international airport (airport code LIR) and is the best place to arrive for visits to the Guanacaste and Nicoya peninsula.
When to go
April through November is when fewer tourists visit Costa Rica and when hotels discount their rates substantially. Costa Rica is covered with rain forests and yes it rains in the rain forest. Generally this means sunny mornings and rain during the afternoon and possibly at night.
The Northwest Pacific beaches are the driest areas of the country. These two areas are Guanacaste and the Nicoya peninsula. The southern Caribbean beaches are best visited from late August through October but rain showers can happen anytime during the year.
Don’t expect to see the summit of the Arenal volcano during these time periods. Clouds will generally prevent viewing lava flows during the winter months in Costa Rica. The small town of La Fortuna provides lodging close to Arenal but at significantly cheaper rates.
Getting Around
The public bus system in Costa Rica goes pretty much everywhere. The cost varies depending on the bus route but expect to pay less than $7 to go anywhere. The buses are not air conditioned and can be crowded so arrive early to get a seat.
Lodging
Camping in Costa Rica is cheap but only for the young and hardy traveler. Many areas provide facilities including drinking water. Inexpensive accommodations are easily found throughout the country but especially in Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean side where choices are plentiful below $25 per night.
Stay away from the hot spots like Manuel Antonio, Jaco, Tamarindo, Arenal, and elsewhere for budget accommodations. Places like Playa Samara, Mal Pais, La Fortuna (near Arenal), and Puerto Viejo are excellent choices for a fun filled cheap vacation.
The Moon guide book contains many inexpensive options for lodging throughout the country from shared dorm style to small apartments with kitchenettes.
Food
Local restaurants called sodas provide filling food at cheap prices. All imported food and drink is very expensive. Gallo Pinto, a rice and bean dish made with spices and Lizano Salsa, fresh tropical fruits, chicken, and seafood are featured dishes.
Do it yourself tours
Canopy tours and other adventure tours can be quite expensive. Hiking in the rain forest parks without a guide is very inexpensive however. Generally, park entrance fees are in the $6 – $8 range. Manuel Antonio park is easily hiked without guides but is one of the most expensive areas to find a room. Rincon de la Vieja National park features wild orchids, bubbling mud pits, volcanic craters, and great nature hikes.
Costa Rica is a friendly Latin American country that hosted 1.6 million tourists in 2005. The beauty of the country and its people are unparalleled.

How Discount Vitamins Can Really Boost The Immunity System
The idea of using discount vitamins may not seem important to some but it can be one of the best choices we can make for our bodies. As human beings, most of our immune systems are naturally prone to fight infection and disease. However, as we grow older, our immune systems begin to deplete and those infections and/or diseases that were once easy to fight off, can be much more difficult. Our bodies are put under strain nearly everyday due to stress, bad nutritional habits, no exercise and more. It is our responsibility to take care of our bodies and one of the best ways to make up for those strains we all face, is to begin and continually take vitamin supplements. Some of the most unnoticeable habits can be the ones to truly affect the immune system:Excessive fat intake – Too much fat in a person’s food intake can cause the immune system to slow the production of antibodies and the amount of white blood cells. Excessive fat intake also leads to obesity, which also depletes a person’s immune system and ability to fight off diseases.* Excessive alcohol – Although it is well know the effects alcohol in excess can damage the liver, it can also affect the immune system in very serious ways. Large amounts of alcohol cause nutritional deficiencies and suppress the amount of white blood cells that can be produced. * Excessive sugar intake – Eating or drinking too much sugar can cause the body to be unable to produce white blood cells, just like excessive alcohol and fat intake does. One study from the United States Department of Health and Human Services shows that ingesting 8 tablespoons of sugar (2 cans of soda) can suppress the ability for the body to create white blood cells by forty percent. * Food allergies – One of the most unknown habits that affect the immune system is food allergies. While most people who have food allergies tell of specific reactions they would have to a certain food, the affect on the immune system and its ability to produce can be just as dangerous. Many times when food allergies take place, the intestinal lining will breakdown and cause the person with the allergy to become sick or have reactions. Because of this breakdown the intestinal wall is damaged to the point that before it can recover, sickness can enter. * Beginning the process of taking discount vitamins should start with a trip to the doctor’s office. Not only can they explain what vitamins are best suited for your body but they can also warn of any side effects that there may be with other medications you might be taking. Many doctors may recommend at first a multivitamin which usually includes a little of each of the important types of vitamins. * Vitamin C – Found naturally in many fruit and vegetables, Vitamin C increases the production of the infection fighting white blood cells and antibodies. These can help to reduce the risk of heart disease and has been shown to increase the levels of interferon, which is the antibody that coats cell surfaces to fight off infection and disease. Studies have also shown that those who have a high intake of Vitamin C in their diets have lower rates of colon, prostate, and breast cancer. Vitamin C can be found in fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, kiwi, cantaloupe and broccoli. * Vitamin E – Known as an antioxidant and immune booster, Vitamin E stimulates the production of those natural cells that find and destroy germs and cancer cells. In addition, this vitamin also lowers the risk of heart disease and increases the strength of the immune system. * Beta Carotene – This is an important vitamin that has multiple uses. It increases the number of infection-fighting cells and helper T-cells in the body. Just as the other vitamins do, Beta Carotene has also been found to fight heart disease. The most interesting fact about Beta Carotene is that it turns into Vitamin A, which helps to fight cancer and boosts the immune system. Keep in mind with Vitamin A however, that too much can be dangerous, which is another reason to check with your doctor before taking discount vitamins.* Zinc – As one of the least known supplements, it can actually be one of the most important. Zinc increases the amount of white blood cells which can help to fight infection more aggressively. Studies of zinc supplements have also shown to slow the growth of cancer, making it highly prescribed by doctors of cancer patients in their treatment regimen. * Garlic – The sulfur compound contained in garlic is credited for its usefulness. Known as an immunity booster, it increases the number of infection-fighting white cells, natural killer cells, and increases the production of antibodies. Garlic also serves as an antioxidant and some studies even indicate that it can help to protect against cancer. It is always important to remember that just taking discount vitamins will not keep you from becoming sick or being unhealthy. The key is to exercise, take daily vitamin supplements and see the doctor regularly with any problems that arise or just for a check-up. Starting the road to a healthy and better life is to realize the areas which you need to work on and to be realistic, and stick to the goals you set for your routine.

Things To Watch Out For In A Used Car
Used cars are not regulated as well as the new car industry is which leaves a lot of room for unscrupulous snake oil salesmen to enter the business. There is no lemon law for used cars so in most cases if you buy a vehicle with problems you are out of luck. With that said there are things that you can do to avoid problems.
First off, doing some research first and have an idea of what you want to begin with. You should have it down to at least a certain category of vehicle and preferably down to maybe three or four models. Check the approximate values at a site like kbb.com so you have at least some idea of what the vehicle should sell for.
When shopping for a used car it is even more crucial that you shop in the daytime and in clear sunny weather so that you can see any blemishes. I have seen many cars that looked good in the rain only to reveal faded paint and blemishes in the sunlight.
One thing you must realize is that there is no used car factory so you may have to make some compromises. Do not compromise on safety and don’t by a vehicle that has a laundry list of issues that you will have to repair yourself.
You should always take the vehicle for a road test and if at all possible take it overnight. You should then take it to your mechanic and have them check the vehicle out and let you know what they think of it. If it has too many problems pass on it.
Make safety a primary concern. Buy a vehicle that is new enough to include airbags and if possible anti-lock brakes as well.
Another big thing to watch out for especially after the flooding in Louisiana and Mississippi last year from Hurricane Katrina is flood damage. There are many crooks who will buy flood damaged vehicles and have them detailed and cleaned up and sell them as perfect. A flood damaged vehicle will be fraught with problems from engine problems to the electrical system and more. One area that is often overlooked by these crooks is the seat belt retainer cover. If you pull the seat belt all the way out you may find evidence of mildew or even mud!
One of the best things to do also is to go to a dealer who uses the new Carfax system which reports any major issues that vehicle has ever had.About the Author

Your Online Business Merchant Account
Are you ready to learn more about an online business merchant account? Most likely you have heard something about this type of e-commerce from your colleagues and peers in the local business community. Or perhaps you have read about a merchant account with its attendant benefits in a financial publication. But even if you have heard nothing at all, here is an opportunity to find out why so many company owners are applying for a merchant account to upgrade their business services.
An online business merchant account can be processed for your company in a matter of hours. You will first have to compare lenders? offers to get the best possible deal for your business. Then you need to make sure you understand all the prices that could apply to your account. Some may not be clearly apparent on the home page of the lender’s Website, if that is how you are researching the financial underwriters who offer this service. Upon approval, you will be ready to set up various types of credit card processing options to facilitate customers? payments for goods and services and to make your job of collecting payments that much easier.
How can you use an online business merchant account to increase profitability? One way is to install a credit card processor in your store or shop if you are a retailer. Your customers will appreciate the option of paying by credit in addition to offering cash or a check. Another way the merchant account can help is to provide you with a wireless credit card processor for use in your travels. If you deliver goods, for example, your customers can pay by credit the same day, thus eliminating the need for billing or waiting. At other times you may wish to attend a conference or a special event like a trade show where you may be able to sell company products using a credit card payment processor. This can save you money by letting you pay the lower retail rate with a swiped card as opposed to the higher rate required when you call in the customer’s credit card for approval and someone in the office must key in the account number.
Many business owners will agree that the chief advantage of your online account is to set up a company Website and sell products there as well. You can draw customers from around the world that will be ready to pay with a credit card when your Website is ready to accept credit payments. The site can be operational around the clock with no need for constant staffing, although it is a good idea to have technical support available as needed. When your Website works as it should, the home page can be easily located by many search engines and will bring customers to your location for browsing and possible purchases. When they key in their credit card numbers in real time, your lender, who has coordinated this service with a gateway entity, will deposit the funds in your account promptly. Business doesn’t get much better than that, so inquire today about an online business merchant account.

Successful Marketing for Home Based Business
By Declan O’Reilly
‘A successful marketing strategy is not based on doing what you like but liking what you do…’
Are you looking for information to build and grow a home-based business? If so, you are in the right place! Here you will find information on implementing a successful marketing campaign and growing your home based business.
The Problem
Many home-based business owners don’t know how to best market their businesses. Some ignore marketing altogether, hoping that customers or website visitors will appear out of thin air. Others market in a scattershot way producing untargeted traffic or unqualified prospects. Either approach will keep you from achieving your business potential and reaching your financial goals and possibly even damage your reputation.
The Solution
Whether you’ve been thinking about starting a home business or you’re already a seasoned home-based business owner, the principle remains the same. Your business’ survival and success rests on how effectively you market your business or product. Examine some of the following marketing strategies and tools to help you boost your home based business profits.
Home-Based Business Advantage
Low overhead costs, no commute to work and the ability to work around your children are some of the few advantages for home based business owners. Gear your marketing efforts to capitalize on these and other home-based strengths including:
Adaptability – Information Technology has escalated the rate of change in the marketplace. To survive and thrive, you must be prepared to act, and act quickly. As a home-based business owner, you can make adjustments instantly, without having to cut through the red tape of bureaucratic decision-making procedures common in larger businesses.
Technology – Computers, the Internet, PDA’s, and other emerging technologies can take home based businesses to a more level playing field with bigger companies, empowering home based business owners to accomplish tasks that used to require hiring staff to perform. Try to keep up-to-speed with technology.
Flexibility. – Unlike traditional businesses that require full-time attention and high overhead costs, home based businesses can be operated part-time, at low cost, and depending on your financial goals can be phased into full-time operations.
Taking Your Business To The Next Level
A common reason home businesses fail is because owners neglect the up-front planning needed to position their ventures. Once you have defined your market position and where you want to take your business in the 12 months you will have moved one step closer to success.
If you already have a business begin by taking inventory of where your business is right now. What specific goods and services do you provide? How do you set yourself apart? What is your business’ reputation? How are you perceived by your customers or clients as far as your prices, reliability, and other elements of your products or services?
The next step is to project where you want to take your business in the 12 months. What market position do you want to occupy? Is the niche market you want large enough? How will your benefits outsell those provided by the competition? Do you have the ability, capital, resources and support to make your market position a reality? Your answers will give you the information you need to begin designing or updating your marketing plan.
Planning Ahead
Once you have determined where you want to go, outline the essential steps to get there. Begin by writing a one sentence purpose (mission) statement for your marketing campaign. The rest of your plan should include a brief description of each of the following:
Benefits of your products and services.
Your target market.
What marketing tools will best help you achieve your mission.
Your market niche. What sets you apart in the market place.
Your marketing budget.
Keep your marketing plan brief. The more concise you make your marketing plan, the more effective it will be in evaluating your marketing efforts.
Finding Your Niche
This is often the hardest task for a beginning home-based business owner but also one of the most crucial. In order for your venture to survive in a competitive marketplace, you must distinguish yourself from other businesses and find a niche. What makes your business unique? Why should someone choose to buy from you over a competitor? Prospective clients want to know. If you can give them a compelling answer, you will position yourself as a leader in your industry boosting your profit potential. Research your market thoroughly before jumping in.
Marketing Tools
No matter how you choose to publicize your business, one quality will set you apart from your competitors: The ability to write effective ad copy. You’re vying for the attention of consumers bombarded each day with advertisements. It is estimated that the average person is exposed to over 1,200 advertising messages per DAY! Make sure your advertisement stands out from the rest of this ‘noise’.
When you have determined your market position and drawn up a marketing plan you are ready to start spreading the word about your products and services. One effective way is using the existing offline media in your area. You have a variety of media choices depending upon your target market and your advertising budget including magazines, newspapers, television, radio, and the internet. Start by evaluating how and where your competitors advertise. What’s working for them? Take their best ideas; then design your own winning layout, positioning yourself as having the best offer.
The Importance of Headlines
As the first phrases seen in advertising copy, headlines should arouse enough interest in the reader so that they will want to read or listen on to learn more about your business or product. To get ideas about what headlines will work best for you, scan different types of ad copy, particularly those from your competitors. Create a swipe file of different ads and ideas that you come across from different sources. But remember to be careful of using other peoples copyrighted material.
Capture your customer’s interest with a compelling statement of offer
Highlight the most important benefits
Offer extreme value
Make a call strong call to action.
Testing Your Ads
Advertising can be expensive, but for just about any business a mandatory investment. To get the most out of your ads, test them by the following criteria:
What is the quantity of leads or prospects that the ad generates? Compare this amount in terms of a unit cost of advertising (dollars in advertising per leads generated).
How many of these leads convert into sales? Different advertising media due to the audiences they target will vary in the numbers of actual closes.
Continually check the response from your ads, make changes or run a new ad if necessary. Use ad trackers and keep testing, testing testing until you achieve the response required.
Internet Marketing
Imagine! You can have a salesperson working for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week even while you sleep. A web site and effective use of e-mail marketing can turn your small home-based business into a global business putting you on a level playing field with large corporations. With easy and afforbable web design tools getting a web site up and running is within reach of everybody.
Sell Benefits Not Features!
Any seasoned business owner knows that it costs five times more to sell to a new prospect than to an existing client. Studies show that each satisfied customer will spread the good word about your business to at least one other person. On the reverse side of the coin a dissatisfied customer will complain to up to five or ten potential customers. Your mission in getting customer referrals to turn passive satisfied customers into actively enthusiastic supporters who will promote your business. The best way to do this is through:
Offering outstanding value to your customers
Delivering your product on time.
Solving customer’s problems.
Maintaining regular contact with customers through feedback forms
Following up your customers regularly.
Creating long-term relationships with customers.
Personalising your product or service.
Finally…
Whether you’re just launching your home based business or have been building one for years, don’t allow lack of information keep you from achieving your financial dreams. Study your marketing options and decide which marketing strategy will best position you for long-term success.
