Significance Of Insulating A Metal Roof

Due to light weight and durability factor, metal roofs are chosen over others for building commercial and suburban buildings. Steel, copper and aluminum are the materials that are used for building a metal roof. However, the true potential of a metal roof can be achieved only when it is properly insulated.

In order to insulate your metal roof, you can use plywood or oriented strand boards. Place them in such a direction that they are perpendicular to the roof beam. Use only galvanized or stainless steel nails to fix them up as they are resistant to the corrosion.

Cover this plywood casing with the building paper. This building paper secures the plywood board from moist and leaks. Try to overlap the sheeting paper around six inches and securely stitch them to plywood casing using steel nails or stapler.

After covering the sheathing with the sheeting paper, install rigid foam insulation sheet all over the roof. Make sure the sheets are closely stuck together but avoid overlapping them.

Protect the joins between the sheets of insulation using a duct tape. This extra layer of duct tape on seams will not allow the air and water to enter in. This would enhance the insulating efficiency of the roof.

In case you are trying to insulate an existing roof, you first have to inspect your roof. Enter your attic area and locate a sheathing of plywood or oriented strand board installed at the base of the structure. Horizontal supporting parts are purloins and the larger angled beams are known as joists.

Fit fiberglass bats into the gaps between purloins and plywood. Fitting the fiberglass bats too tightly can diminish the effectiveness of the fiberglass insulation.

If the gaps between the sheathing and the joists are wider then use rigid foam insulation. Cut the sheets of proper sizes and then glue them in place with adhesive or staple pins. Using nails or screws can pierce the insulation sheet and would result in easy leaks. Always stay alert while using the nails as they are sharp and can easily penetrate into your body.
